We leave the hotel at 7:30am and head for the Puno dock to start our boat journey to Amantaní Island. On the way, we stop by the fascinating floating Islands of Uros. On a guided tour you will learn how these man-made islands were constructed and maintained, and you will be introduced to the local way of life. Beautiful local handicrafts are available if you are interested in collecting a few souvenirs.
From there we continue to Amantaní Island where locals will welcome you into their community and assign you to your host families. After lunch with the host families, we will join them for their regular farming activities. This will give you a feel for life in a rural Andean community, and you will enjoy the beauty of a simple life. Later we will follow the stone pathway through farming fields to the highest point on the island.
This lookout point is called “Pachatata” (4,115m / 13,502ft) and it has been, for many centuries, the sacred place of worship for the people of this community. From this site we will enjoy the view of the magnificent Lake Titicaca and its islands.
Back in the village, we will enjoy dinner with our host families. Folk music and dance is an important part of life in the Andes, and after dinner local families and their adopted guests will gather in the “salon communal”. A local group of musicians will play Andean music with their traditional instruments, and you will be invited to join in the joyful dance celebration. If you wish, you can even try on the local dresses, ponchos, and costumes. You will spend the night in the homes of your host families.
